Soul of Sudbury
A collection of photographs taken over two months, which explores the life and soul of a market town in Suffolk Called Sudbury. My home town.
In 2018 I began a photo series of my hometown in Sudbury (Suffolk) called ‘Soul of Sudbury’.
In my last few months of living in Sudbury, I was in a state of reflection where it became prominent that these were the familiar faces of the town that provoked a sense of character and community.
As I delved into this project taking people’s portraits, it quickly developed into a simple publication which I gave out to the people featured in the photographs. During this process, my work was picked up by the local press. However, although I was keen to share my work, I resulted from withdrawing the project completely. In this series, there were some portraits featuring a couple of pedestrians captured without consent and the idea of this project being carried into a public context threw up some questions about the laws and ethics of photojournalism.
From there, I went on the study for a BA Hons in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of the Arts London, where I defined and deepened my understanding and values in documentary storytelling through the forms of photography, film and academic research in ethics.
